Nestled along the Highwood River, just 20 minutes south of Calgary, High River boasts a lifestyle community.
The town is known for its colorful and historic past, and to this day, the landscape is still alive with the same innovative spirit that High River grew from.
Murals throughout the downtown area speak to this wonderful past and locale - from buffalo jumps to the development of Fort Spitzee, the arrival of ranches with thousands of head of cattle, to the High River Air Station, and the influence of British heritage with the High River polo matches. This collection of 16 murals profiles some of the events that have made the High River area great - with special emphasis on the people behind the events.
High River is proud to be the hometown of Prime Minister Joe Clark, and also where one of Canada's best loved writers, W.O. Mitchell, always called home. They are also featured within the town's murals, along with some of our local chuckwagon legends.
Stroll around town, enjoying the mature trees, beautiful open spaces, happy trails, downtown businesses, and a diversified arts and culture scene. Spend a lazy day fishing, or rafting and boating on the Highwood River and on the town's lakes.
With a population now over 10,000, High River offers a unique blend of stores throughout the downtown area that are sure to thrill.
Restaurants and cafes offer an assortment of dining and relaxation experiences.
High River is host of the High River Youth Festival June 9, the Little Britches Parade and Rodeo on the long weekend in May, and annual Chuckwagon Races held with the Guy Weadick Memorial Rodeo June 22nd to 24th. The annual Santa Claus Parade, held the first Friday of December, lights up the night as the only evening parade of its kind.
Whether you're here for the day, the weekend, or for the rest of your life - you'll see what makes High River a residential destination for people of all ages.
