The Regional Geographic Information System (RGIS) project seeks to make available for front-line projects, such as Regional Growth and Sustainability and Utility Servicing, a wide variety of geospatial data through a coordinated and cooperative approach throughout the member municipalities.

Currently in an Exploration phase, RGIS is investigating available geographic information accessible through CRP members' existing GIS data stores, commercial data licensing agencies, and Governments and NGOs. Identification of voids in existing data will enable the RGIS project to develop large scale data collection plans for implementation in 2008.

Despite the current exploratory nature of the project, there is one application in day to day use right now. RGIS supports emergency responders (Police, Fire and EMS), by compiling and maintaining a digital map of all roadways and addresses within the Region. This map is used in central dispatch and on-board navigation by these services in responding to residents' emergencies throughout the Calgary Region.

Data will be organized into 23 thematically categorized layers. Some examples of thematic data are; Hydrology, Digital Elevation Model, Cadastral, Road Centerlines.
